Mass. D1 Boys HS Hockey – CAL vs. Cancer Tournament Final: Newburyport Upends Triton, 3-2, In Battle Of Co-Champs

CHAMPIONSHIP

Newburyport 3, Triton 2

Senior Ryan Archer’s superb individual dash with time winding down pushed Newburyport (10-1-1) past archrival Triton (9-2-1) in the CAL vs. Cancer Tournament title game at Graf Rink. Archer settled senior Owen Spence’s pass through center ice, burst past the Triton defense and deposited the game-winning goal with 2:01 remaining in regulation.

Triton grabbed a 1-0 lead at 5:59 of the first period on senior Brady Lindholm’s tally. Newburyport sophomore Zach McHugh countered with two goals 30 seconds apart on the same shift in the second period for a 2-1 lead the Clippers carried into the break. Triton pulled even early in the third period on senior Ryan Lindholm’s goal, setting the stage for Archer’s heroics. Senior Zach Lever had a pair of assists for Newburyport as did senior James Tatro for Triton.

With the regular-season co-championship and playoff title in tow, the Clippers concluded their best season since back-to-back D2 State title games in 2009 (won, 4-3) and 2010 (lost, 4-2) against Canton and their D1 North semifinal appearance against Winchester in 2018. The Clippers won the season series from Triton, 2-1-1, outscoring the Vikings by a slim 12-9 margin.
