Mass. D-I Highlights: Big Win for Arlington Catholic

In Wednesday night’s second marquee intersectional match-up of Top 10 teams, No. 6 Arlington Catholic (7-0-1) took down No. 9 St. John’s of Shrewsbury (7-3-1), 6-3, at Ed Burns Arena.


Trailing, 3-2, the Cougars unleashed a closing four-goal burst for the win behind goalie John Richard’s 27 saves. Six Cougars scored – Ryan Tierney (goal, assist), Ryan Smith, Aaron Cook, Ivan Mikhaylov, Luke Amato and Jack Rogers. The Pioneers’ goals came from Patrick Storer, Bryan Nelson and Ian Wetherbee, the latter’s giving SJS a 3-2 lead.

Ben Barton Acton-Boxboro

No. 19 Acton-Boxboro (5-1-3) squeezed past Billerica behind Ben Barton’s two goals, both assisted by Hunter Arnold, in MVC/DCL One action.


Eighth-grade defenseman Max McKay made his presence know Wednesday night, netting a natural hat trick to go along with an assist in No 16 St. Mary’s (7-4-1) 8-1 non-league romp past Coyle & Cassidy.


Resurgent Winchester (4-2-4), unbeaten in its last six, toppled Belmont, 4-0, in the Middlesex Liberty behind Brendan Greene’s two goals.


No. 18 Wilmington (6-1-4) continued its stellar D-1 debut campaign, stretching its unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 2-1 decision of Stoneham in the Middlesex Freedom. Austin O’Neal and Cody McGowan scored and Drew Foley had 25 saves.

Westford (3-3-2) halted a two-game skid with a 5-2 MVC/DCL One decision of Andover. Jay Drapeau (2 goals, assist), Ryan Hesseltine (2 goals) and Cam MacDonald (goal, 2 assists) sparked the offense and Kyle Martin made 27 saves.

In Bay State Carey play, Dan Jacobs (2 goals, assist) powered Needham (4-6-0) past slumping Braintree (5-4-1).
