Massachusetts Division 2 Boys Poll
The 2013-2014 regular season is now finished and teams are today awaiting the announcement of the Mass Division 2 North and South sectional playoff pairings. Here is an updated HNIB News Masachusetts Division II poll heading into the post-season. (Note: the MIAA seeds teams on the basis of winning percentage). This will be our final D-2 poll until the end of the tournament.
Despite losing its final regular season game and missing out on an undefeated season, Beverly (18-1-1) stays in the #1 spot and is the favorite coming out of the D2 North bracket. The Panthers finished the final week with an 8-1 win over Peabody, and then a 2-0 loss to D-1 foe Weymouth.
Tewksbury (15-3-2) moves up to #2 as the post-season begins. The Redmen ended with a 3-2 win over Methuen and then battled D-1 rival Wilmington hard in a 5-3 loss. They should cause teams fits in the tournament.
# 3 Canton (12-4-4) is ready to make some noise in the D-2 South bracket. The Bulldogs did fall to Boston Latin in the first round of the Quinn Memorial Tourament, but they beat Lincoln-Sudbury (3-2) in a key non-league showdown and also beat Coyle-Cassidy.
North Reading (16-2-2) finished strong with four wins in the final week, including three straight shutouts, and move up to #4. The Hornets earned the title at the Jeff Hayes Tournament, besting Sandwich in the final.
The loss to Canton and a tie on the last day with North Andover drops Lincoln-Sudbury (12-3-5) to #5 as the second season commences. The Warriors will be ready for post-season play, though, and can’t be taken lightly.
#6 Winthrop (15-5-0) is on a roll, winning 11 of its last 12 games (the only loss to top-ranked Beverly). The Vikings were impressive in a season-ending 7-1 win over Mansfield.
#7 Plymouth South (15-3-2) tied Bishop Stang in its only action of the regular season’s final week. They could draw the top seed in the D2 South Sectional.
#8 Marblehead (16-5-1) could be an intriguing post-season club, back in Division 2 this season. Of the Headers five losses, three were to #1 Beverly and the other two to Winthrop.
Another team playing well down the stretch is #9 Masconomet (14-4-2). The Chieftains won their last four, allowing only one goal in each of those games on the way to a championship in the Gulezian Division of the Newburyport Savings Bank Tournament.
Also new to the Division II post-season is #10 Medfield (14-3-3). The Warriors split a pair of games this week at the Quinn Memorial Tournament, beating host Coyle-Cassidy and losing to Boston Latin. They hope to be a force in the South sectional.
Fellow Tri-Valley league rivals #11 Westwood (15-4-1) and #12 Medway (14-4-2) are in the same boat as Medfield, looking to make some noise in the D-2 South bracket after being elevated from Division 3. Do not look past either of these clubs.
#13 Martha’s Vineyard (13-5-2) lost 8-0 to Bishop Feehan this week, then bounced back to beat Nauset, 11-2. Their goal-scoring ability can not be overlooked.
#14 North Quincy (9-7-4) is scuffling a bit heading into the post-season, winless in its last five games (0-3-2).
#15 Milford (12-6-2) is making its first-ever appearance in the D2 South sectional.
