Mass. Boys HS Hockey – Division 1 Top 20: It Is Catholic Memorial’s Turn At #1; Marshfield Takes Title In Ed Burns Classic

A further testament on the amount of good teams in Massachusetts Division 1 hockey is the fact that this week’s HNIB News Division 1 Top 20 has a new leader, the fifth different team to hold that distincton this year.

That new #1 is Catholic Memorial (14-2-1). The newly-minted Catholic Conference champions had a huge 6-3 win over St. John’s Prep, and then followed up with a 4-0 shutout win over BC High. The Knights are off until another huge contest Friday at Belmont.

Hingham (14-3-1) stays at #2. The Harbormen beat Duxbury (1-0) and then got a tie with #10 Marshfield 5-5 in the finals of the Ed Burns Classic Doherty Division (Marshfield won 6-5 in double OT, but the game goes down as a tie for MIAA purposes). The Harbormen, who do own a win over CM earlier this year, host Winchester Wednesday before heading to the Buddy Ferreira Classic.

#3 St. John’s Prep (14-3-0) followed up the CM defeat by downing Newburyport (7-2) in the annual Derek Hines games. Prep will take on Franklin (Wednesday).

Up a bit to #4 is Austin Prep (12-2-2). The Cougars had shutout wins over Arlington Catholic (2-0) and Winchester (4-0) and a tie with Bishop Fenwick (3-3). AP gets Fenwick again Monday in a CCL Cup matchup and will also head to the Ferreira Classic this weekend.

#5 Xaverian (13-3-1) fell to Malden Catholic in its only action. The Hawks look ahead to key matchup with Marshfield Tuesday and face Framingham (Saturday).

Middlesex League Liberty Division champion Belmont (16-1-3) is at #6. The Marauders beat #7 Arlington (6-2) and then ralllied for a 2-2 tie with Woburn. The CM match-up closes out their regular season.

The Spy Ponders (14-3-2) did get a 3-2 OT win over Reading and a 2-2 deadlock with #9 Braintree (13-3-2) over the weekend. Woburn (Wednesday) and Winchester (Sunday) are on this week’s plate.

#8 Pope Francis (9-5-1) won its Invitational Touranment with wins over Connecticut’s Northwest Catholic and Fairfield Prep. The Cardinals take on Shrewsbury (Wednesday) and Natick (Saturday).

Braintree also beat Framingham (3-2) and Weymouth (5-2). The Wamps face Walpole Wednesday.

#10 Marshfield (13-4-2) took home the Ed Burns Classic title in that classic win over Higham, and also shut out Plymouth North and Duxbury. The Rams take on Bridgewater-Raynham Saturday as well.

#11 Wellesley (12-2-4) had another strong week that saw wins over Needham, Brookline and Tewksbury, and a tie with Framingham. Natick is on the docket for Wednesday.

Wins over Xaverian and St. John’s (S) highlighted the week for #12 Malden Catholic (8-7-0). The Lancers take on NH’s Bishop Guertin (Monday), Falmouth (Wednesday) and Central Catholic (Saturday).

It was a tough-luck weekend for #13 Reading (9-7-2), which fell in a pair of overtime losses to Arlington (3-2) and Canton (4-3, Ed Burns Classic Brinn Division final). The Rockets close out their league slate Tuesday with Stoneham before heading to the Buddy Ferreira Classic.

#14 Central Catholic (8-6-4) had a 3-3 standoff with #15 Chelmsford (11-4-1) and a scoreless tie with Waltham, beat Connecticut’s Notre Dame of West Haven (3-2) and fell to Archbishop Williams (3-1). Billerica is up on Wednesday.

The Lions look ahead to Melrose (Wednesday) and Acton-Boxboro (Saturday).

Rounding out this week’s Top 20 are #16 Woburn (8-4-4), #17 Lincoln-Sudbury (13-3-0), #18 Franklin (13-7-0), #19 Winchester (9-7-3) and #20 BC High (5-10-1).
