There was certainly plenty of holiday tournament action this week and the results of those events have gone a long way into shaping this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Boys D1 Top 20.

Defending state champion BC High (3-1-1) is back at the top, thanks to a 5-4 win over preseason #1 Pope Francis in the finals of the Pete Frates Winter Classic. The Eagles withstood four power play goals by the Cardinals in this rematch of last year;s Super 8 state final.

Things won’t get any easier for BC High, as they get set to tackle #3 Xaverian (4-0-0) in a crucial Catholic Conference matchup on Wednesday (UMass Boston, 6:15 pm). The Hawks jumped up in a big way after their title at the MHL Cup, where they knocked off St. John’s Shrewsbury (3-1) and Marshfield (2-1). They also battle #9 Catholic Memorial on Saturday.

#2 Pope Francis (2-1-0) did beat Central Catholic (4-3).  A big week has the Cardinals hosting #6 Arlington on Thursday and Rhode Island #1 Bishop Hendricken on Saturday.

Up to #4 is Austin Prep (4-0-1), champions of the Christie Serino Christmas Classic, where the Cougars blanked both St. Mary’s (2-0) and Hingham (4-0). This week, AP gets Central Catholic (Wednesday) and Bishop Fenwick (Saturday).

That loss to Austin Prep dropped #5 Hingham from the unbeaten ranks. The Harbormen did have solid wins over Weymouth (8-1) and Malden Catholic (3-1). They take on #7 Marshfield in a Monday afternoon matinee and travel to Andover on Saturday.

When #6 Arlington takes on Pope Francis, it will have been 12 days since its last game. The Spy Ponders will also see Woburn on Saturday.

After battling Hingham Monday, #7 Marshfield (2-1-2) will host Sandwich on Saturday.

#8 St. John’s Prep (2-1-2) battled hard at the Frates Classic, earning ties with BC High (1-1) and Central Catholic (3-3) to move up. The Eagles look ahead to #15 Reading (Wednesday) and Malden Catholic (Saturday).

With a solid showing in winning its on Christmas Tournament, Catholic Memorial (4-1-0) breaks into the top 10 at #9. The Knights have allowed just one goal in their four victories. They have an intriguing New Year’s Day battle with #16 Needham before facing Xaverian.

#10 Braintree (4-1-0) rebounded from a loss to Duxbury with a win over Bridgewater-Raynham (3-0). The Wamps host Framingham on Saturday.

Both #11 St. Mary’s (5-1-0) and #12 Winchester (5-1-0) move up a few rungs. New to this week’s rankings are Melrose (5-0-1) at #14 and Billerica (4-1-1) at #20.
