Going into the playoffs, coaches said it was a wide-open race.
Boy were the coaches right with the seventh-seeded Scarborough Red Storm defeating the fifth-seeded Thornton Academy Golden Trojans, 2-1 in double OT in the Class A State Final.
Scarborough ends the season as the No. 1 team in the HNIB News Class A Top 7 as its play run included wins over Portland/Deering, Bangor. and South Portland/Waynflete before reaching the state championship game.
No. 2 Thornton Academy had a solid playoff run defeating Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse, Falmouth, and Edward Little.
No. 3 Edward Little spent most of the season as the top team in Class A with a strong start to begin the year but suffered losses late in the regular season to South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport and Brunswick. The Red Eddies defeated rival Lewiston in its lone playoff victory.
No. 4 South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport had ups and downs during the season and were on the verge of a state championship appearance but lost to Scarborough in overtime in the state semifinals. The Red Riots knocked off Saint Dom’s and Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills to reach the semifinals.
No. 5 Bangor was right there with Edward Little for most of the season, earning the second-seed in the playoffs, but their playoff woes continued after earning a bye into the quarterfinals, Scarborough upset the Rams.
No. 6 Falmouth won six straight games, including a playoff prelim win over Biddeford/Massabesic/Old Orchard before losing to Thornton Academy in the quarterfinals 2-1.
No. 7 Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills had a solid year, including defeating Scarborough in the regular season. In the prelims, the Ice Cats defeated Marshwood/Traip/Sanford/Noble, before losing to South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport 4-3 in the quarterfinal.
