Greely reign as Class B state champions is over as the second-seeded Brunswick Dragons defeated the top-seeded Rangers 6-4 in the Class B South regional final at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Tuesday.

The Greely Rangers had won the Class B state championship in 2019 and 2020. There was no playoffs in 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic

Ollie Bateman put the Dragons up 1-0 when he skated down the right-wing and cut to the goal. He fired the puck past Greely goalie Keji Wiessner. The goal came at the 8:52 mark of the opening period.

Evan Dutil tied the game at 1-1, 10:15 into the opening period with a point shot. Ryan Moore and Brooks Williams had the assists.

Joe Marro restored Brunswick read when he put home a rebound with just under four minutes remaining in the first period. Bateman had the assist.

Dutil scored his second goal of the game early in the second period when he skated from end to end and beat Patterson with a back-hander. Charlie Moore had an assist.

The Dragons came out in the third period on all cylinders. Bateman scored his second goal of the game 94 seconds into the period. Nick Marro scored nearly 30 seconds later to stretch the lead to 4-2, with AJ Wolverton recording the assist.

Sam Masse ripped a shot past Wiessner 2:24 into the period to extend the lead to 5-2. The goal was the end of Wiessner’s night in goal.

The Rangers chipped away in the middle of the period. Ryan Moore scored on the power play. Williams had an assist. Then Gage Cooney had a power-play goal with under three minutes to play to cut the deficit to 5-4.

That’s the closest Greely would get. Dutil took a penalty with 1:22 remaining and Grey Perham scored an empty-net goal from his own defensive zone to give Brunswick a 6-4 lead.
