Class B South
Greely 9, Cape Elizabeth 4
It took a while but Greely found its scoring touch as the Rangers defeated Cape Elizabeth 9-4 to capture its second straight Class B South regional championship.
Andrew Moore had a hat trick while Jackson Williams had two goals to lead the way.
Cape Elizabeth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period as Matthew Laughlin scored at the 3:51 mark of the opening frame. Nearly eight minutes later, Philip Tarling gave Cape Elizabeth a 2-0 lead.
The Rangers woke up in the second period as Alex Wallace scored at the 3:06 mark with Jake MacDonald and Andrew Moore setting the goal up. 43 seconds later Moore scored on an unassisted tally. Jackson Williams gave Greely a 3-2 lead 7:16 into the second period.
The Capers tied the game off an offensive zone draw on the power play as Tarling found the back of the net for the second time on the night from Laughlin.
Williams responded with his second goal of the period for Greely with 2:05 remaining in the the second period. With 1:08 remaining in the period, MacDonald found the back of the net.
Andrew Moore gave the Rangers a 6-3 lead 38 seconds to the third. Evan Dutil scored on a breakaway at the 5:30 mark as the lead grew to 7-3. MacDonald made it 8-3 just past the midway point of the third period. Moore completed the hat trick with 2:11 remaining.
Gavin Simopoulos rounded out the scoring in the game by tallying the Caper’s fourth goal.
Jared Swisher made 13 saves for Greely while Garrett Mello made 28 saves for Cape Elizabeth.
Class B North
Old Town/Orono 1, Waterville/Winslow 0
Tyler McCannell scored the lone goal of the contest 9:47 into the first period against Waterville/Winslow to give Old Town/Orono back-to-back Class B North regional championships.
It was the third year in a row that these two teams met in the regional final.
Kohle Parker made 29 saves for the shutout. It was the first time all season that Waterville/Winslow had been shutout. The RiverHawks had four opportunities on the power play to try to tie the game in the second period.
Ben Grenier made 20 saves on 21 chances in the losing effort..
