Maine Class A Top 7: No. 1 Lewiston In High Gear Right From The Start

The No. 1 Lewiston Blue Devils have come out of the gate firing all cylinders, picking up wins over defending Class B State Champions Greely and Bideford/Massabesic/Old Orchard Beach in the first week of the season. This past week, they defeated Scarborough 5-1 and St. Dom’s 3-0. They will play two exhibition games this week in the St. Dom’s Christmas Classic before returning to regular season play against Edward Little on New Year’s Day.

Also coming out of the gates strong is No. 2 Thornton Academy.  The Trojans are also undefeated with opening week wins over Portland/Deering and over Cape Elizabeth. This week they notched a 5-3 win over Falmouth Wednesday and a 3-2 win over Edward Little. They travel to Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse on Monday for the only regular-season contest until Jan. 4.

No. 3 South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete took its only loss of the season against defending Class A champions St. Dom’s on opening night. They notched a win against Portland/Deering at the end of opening week. This past week they had a 3-0 shutout against Yarmouth and tied Biddeford/Massabesic/Old Orchard on Saturday. Their next regular-season game is Dec. 30 against Scarborough.

No. 4 Bangor opened the season with a shutout win over Windham/Westbrook before Hampden Academy shut the Rams out. This week they earned a big win over one of the Class B favorites Old Town/Orono, 5-3, and beat Portland/Deering, 4-1, on Saturday. They host Falmouth on Friday.

No. 5 St. Dom’s opened with the 4-3 win over South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete before splitting the season series with Falmouth as the Saints lost at home 6-2 to the Yachtsmen before taking a 3-2 win a couple days later. They dropped a decision to Lewiston on Saturday. They host a Christmas Tournament featuring teams throughout New England with their first game of the tournament being a regular-season contest against EL on Thursday.

No. 6 Scarbrough had a 4-1 win over Gorham on Dec. 14 before falling to Lewiston, 5-1, in its second game of the season on Wednesday. They host South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete on Monday in their lone regular-season game during the holiday break.

No. 7 Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills has had a solid start after opening the season with a win over John Bapst/MDI/Bangor Christian. They dropped a 3-2 decision to York before defeating Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse 7-1 on Friday. They don’t return to regular season play until Dec. 30 when they face Windham/Westbrook.
