Maine Class A Top 10: No real surprises in early going

In the early going in Class A there’s no real surprises as the tw0- time defending state champions Lewiston is out to a 3-0-0 start with wins over Scarborough, Cony/Hall-Dale, Monmouth and Edward Little. They end 2017 with a contest against Biddeford.

Falmouth remains chasing the Blue Devils as they are out to a strong start with wins over Massabesic/Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard, Scarborough and Thornton Academy. The only blemish on their record is a 3-3 tie with St. Dom’s in a back-and-forth contest. They have three games in the coming week as theywere scheduled to face Cheverus on Saturday, Biddeford on Wednesday and Scarborough on the 30th.

Cheverus remains steady at No. 3 with wins over South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport and Biddeford, but fell to Thornton Academy. After their contest against Falmouth, they return to the ice on New Year’s Day against Portland/Deering.

St. Dom’s got off to a slow start losing to Cape Elizabeth moves up to No. 4 with wins over Biddeford and Kennebunk/Wells and that tie with Falmouth. They face another rival EL to start their holiday tournament on Wednesday that will count towards the standings. The remainder of the week is exhibition games in their tournament.

Biddeford slides to No. 5 as they defeated Class B runner-up York in the season opener and Marshwood/Traip/Sanford. They lost to St. Dom’s and Cheverus. They have those key contests with Falmouth and Lewiston this week.

Edward Little jumps into the poll as Norm Gagne has the Red Eddies to a 3-1 start with wins over Windham/Westbrook, Gorham and Bangor. Their lone loss is a 5-0 defeat to Lewiston. Their game against Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth for Saturday was postponed. They have St. Dom’s this week as their lone countable game.

Poland/Leavitt/Oak Hill/Gray-New Gloucester moves to No. 7 poll as they jump to a 3-0 start with wins over Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse, Lawrence/Skowhegan/MCI and Windham/Westbrook. They return to the ice against Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth on Thursday.

Bangor is off to a 3-1 start with wins over Lawrence/Skowhegan/MCI, Brewer and Hampden Academy. Their lone defeat came against EL. Their game against Falmouth this evening was postponed while they return to the ice next Friday against Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse.

Portland/Deering jumped out to a 2-0 start with wins over Thornton Academy and South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport before falling to Scarborough. They face York tomorrow before facing rival Cheverus on the 1st.

Scarborough had a tough schedule to start the year losting to Lewiston and Falmouth, but are back to .500 with wins over Portland/Deering and Gorham. They have South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport and Falmouth this week.
