As we enter the final week of the season, we will have some potential playoff match-ups in the final week in Eastern A.
No. 2 Bangor dispatched No. 10 Edward Little, 5-1, on Wednesday, the Brewer Witches, 5-2, on Thursday and Brunswick, 10-2, on Saturday. The Rams have No. 4 Lewiston on Monday and No. 1 St. Dominic Academy Wednesday.
Bangor can solidify the No. 1 seed in Class A East if they sweep the Lewiston-Auburn schools. The No. 1 seed gets a bye into the Regional Finals on Feb. 28.
St. Dom’s defeated Cony/Monmouth, 5-1, on Wednesday and Edward Little on Saturday, 4-3. Their regular-season finale against Bangor could decide the top seed. A Monday matinee match against Massachusetts power Malden Catholic was cancelled.
Lewiston also took care of business this week with a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Biddeford and a 7-0 victory over Brunswick on Friday night. Bangor is also their final game of the regular season.
In Western A, we had a playoff game this past week as No. 5 Scarborough defeated No. 3 Falmouth 2-1 on Wednesday. Scarborough also defeated Thornton Academy, 3-1, on Saturday. Their lone game next week is against No. 7 Cheverus on Thursday.
Falmouth hosts Thornton on Thursday to cap off their regular season.
The intriguing playoff race in Western A is the race for the third seed which right now is held by Cheverus. The fourth seed will most likely see No. 8 Noble/Wells, which plays a Tier II schedule. Dean Pratt has 39 goals for the Knights. They will be a dangerous team in the first round.
Biddeford did beat Cheverus 5-0 on Wednesday. Cheverus was supposed to play Portland/Deering on Saturday and they will have to play that game this week. Biddeford defeated Greely, 3-2, on Saturday and host Portland/Deering on Thursday.
Noble/Wells defeated Marshwood/Traip, 11-1, on Monday and Westbrook, 6-2, on Thursday. They have Massabesic/Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard, Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills and South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete this week.
No. 9 Lawrence/Skowhegan defeated Thornton Academy, 8-1, on Wednesday and had their game against Mt. Ararat/Lisbon postponed on Saturday. They will have to make up that contest by Thursday. They also host Cony/Monmouth on Wednesday.
After tough losses to Bangor and St. Dom’s this week, Edward Little finishes the year against Poland/Gray-New Gloucester/Oak Hill on Wednesday.
