The Maine Principal Association boys’ Class A hockey tournament starts on Saturday with one preliminary round game in Western Class A. The No. 8 South Portland Red Riots (11-7) take on the No. 9 Lake Region/Fryeburg/Oxford Hills (8-10-0) co-op team at 7:30 at Portland Ice Arena.
The winner will face No. 1 seed in Western A Falmouth (13-5-0) on Tuesday. A time hasn’t been announced yet for that game.
The other quarterfinal games in Western A on Tuesday, Feb 25.
No. 7 Portland/Deering (6-11-1) vs. No. 2 Scarborough (12-5-1) TBA
No. 6 Thornton Academy (7-10-1) vs. No. 3 Biddeford (9-7-2), 7:30 p.m.
No. 5 Cheverus (9-8-1) vs. No. 4 Noble/Wells (14-4), TBA
On the other side of the bracket in Eastern A, Bangor (15-3-0) is the No. 1 seed and received a bye into the regional semifinal round on March 1 with only seven teams making the playoffs in Eastern A.
The three quarterfinal games are:
Monday, Feb. 24
No. 7 Cony/Monmouth (9-8-1) vs. No. 2 Lewiston (14-4), 8:20 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 25
No. 6 Edward Little (10-7-1) vs. No. 3 St. Dom’s (10-7-1), TBA
No. 5 Brunswick (9-7-2) vs. No. 4 Lawrence/Skowhegan (12-6-0), 5 p.m.
Both Eastern and Western A regional semifinals will take place at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston on March 1. The Western regional semifinals will be at noon and 2 p.m. while Eastern A’s will go at 6 and 8 p.m. The Regional Finals are Tuesday, March 4 in Lewiston at 6 and 8 p.m. It hasn’t been determined which region will have the first game. The State Finals are Saturday, March 8 at 6 p.m. at the Colisee.
