Maine Class A Poll

The regular season is now in full swing and there’s some surprises in Class A hockey. To no one’s surprise, Lewiston is the top team as they have jumped out to a 3-0 start. The Blue Devils have wins over the Cheverus Stags to start the season, a 4-2 victory over the Scarborough Red Storm and a 6-0 victory over rivals Edward Little Red Eddies. Their lone game this week is against the Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse Eagles.
What has been a surprise this season has been the Scarborough Red Storm – the state runner-ups from last season – is off to a 0-3-1 start. They opened the season with a 3-3 tie against the Falmouth Yachtsmen while losing to Greely, Lewiston and Biddeford. This week their lone game is against Cheverus.
Speaking of the Yachtsmen, Falmouth is off to a 3-0-1 start as they defeated the Biddeford Tigers and took care of a couple Class B opponents in the Yarmouth Clippers and the Cape Elizabeth Capers. They return to regular season competition after the new year against the Greely Rangers on Jan. 2.
Bangor is off to a 4-0 start as they have only allowed one goal this season. After opening up the year with a win over Lawrence/Skowhegan, the Rams have defeated Class B teams in John Bapst and Brewer. They also defeated Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse. The Rams take on St. Dominic Academy on Tuesday in their lone regular season game of the week.
St. Dom’s is off to a 2-1 start. They opened the year up with a 6-2 victory over Thornton Academy and a 7-0 victory over Edward Little. They fell to the Cheverus Stags 6-1. As mentioned they are playing Bangor this week as part of the St. Dominic Academy Christmas Classic Hockey Tournament which will have several teams from New England competing.
Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth lost to Portland/Deering, 5-4 in overtime. They have defeated Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse, Brunswick and Massabesic/Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard. They return to the ice on Jan. 5.
Portland/Deering is off to a 3-0 start with wins over the Windham/Westbrook Eagles and Marshwood/Traip/Sanford in addition to the opening night win over Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth. They return to the ice on Jan. 2 against Cheverus.
Biddeford is 2-1 with wins over Scarborough and Cheverus. Their lone loss was against Falmouth. They have their rival Thornton on New Year’s Eve day.
Cheverus has a win over Thornton Academy in addition to defeating St. Dom’s. They gave Lewiston all they can handle and lost to Biddeford 3-2. Their lone game this week is against Scarborough on Tuesday.
Thornton Academy is 2-2 after starting the with losses to St. Dom’s and Cheverus. They picked up wins over Kennebunk and South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete.
