Girls Bay State Herget Division Preview: Braintree Ready to Step Up

The newly-aligned Bay State League should make for an interesting race in the Herget Division, as Braintree, Needham and Weymouth move over to join Milton and Walpole.

BRAINTREE (17-5-1)

With no seniors in the lineup, team chemistry will play a major role. “Hopefully they will leave personalities in the parking lot and become a family in the locker room,” said coach Kevin Burchill, now in his 20th year.

Braintree

The junior trio of Abbey Holland (30 pts), Maggie Doherty (22 pts) and Stella Shea (19 pts) will power the Wamps offensive attack.

Key defensemen are junior Delia Lee (24 pts) and junior Mia Zaniboni.

Newcomers looking to contribute right away are junior Allie Decosta and freshmen Lila Shea, Rose Harvey, Maggie Burchill and Maeve Holland.

Needham

NEEDHAM (12-7-3)

It will be interesting to see how the Rockets fare in the new Bay State alignment, now housed in the Herget Division. Coach Allisyn Furano-Foster says communication and cohesive play will be keys to success.

Up front, junior Celia Blaszkowsky will be a major factor in the Needham offense. New senior Lexi Schmalz should pay immediate dividends. Sophomores Maddy Foster, Caroline Han, Charlotte Tolman and Grace Kelley, and junior Jessica McEvoy are back as well.

Veteran senior Elizabeth Phalen, one of the team’s top scorers last year, moves to defense to solidify that position. Senior Brooke Reilly returns as well.  Sophomores Nora Focht and Cammy Foster got varsity experience a year ago.

Taking over in goal for the Rockets is sophomore Kenzie Kelly.

WEYMOUTH (5-14-1)

A realignment of the Bay State League brings Weymouth to the Herget Division this season. Coach Dan McGlone says he will have a team of hard-working determined players who will be taking a run at returning to the post-season.

A young but talented offensive nucleus includes junior Sam Cain, junior Drew Dempsey, sophomore Emily Bizbee and sophomore Chloe Coldwell.

The Wildcats will have some good experience on defense as well with the return of junior Katie Borkowski, junior Marissa Ferrara, sophomore Emily Long and sophomore Gracie Laubenstein. Senior captain Peyton Beady is back to take care of things in the Weymouth cage.

New players to watch are Sophie Buccheri and Mairead O’Connell.

Milton

MILTON (14-6-3)

The Wildcats need to gel early with a young team and get off to a good start. Underclassmen will need to step up produce offensively after the graduation of some key forwards.

That job will fall to junior Anna Kennedy (18 pts), junior Avery Blasdale (13 pts) and sophomore Rory Flynn (11 pts). Looking to help out are freshmen Grace Long, Grace DeBenedictis and Olivia Brennick.

Senior Bella Calcagno and sophomore Maggie Mitchell are key components on defense for coach Bob Dwan. Freshman Audrey Hockey will have a role.

Walpole

Senior Mary O’Connell is ready to take on the goaltending duties for the Wildcats.

WALPOLE (10-10-3)

The Rebels went two rounds into the post-season last year and with a good nucleus back, expect them to be solid again, compete for a Herget crown, and possibly be a tough out come tournament time.

Coach Joe Verderber’s three senior captains at forward will be the pacesetters of the offensive attack. They are Meghan Hamilton, Audra Tosone and Olivia Malone. Junior Catie Martin will have a big involvement as well.

senior Madison Ryan and sophomore Elizabeth DeSimone are solid returners on the blue line. The Rebels also return a pair of goaltenders in senior Cam Murphy and senior Kiera McInerny.

New freshman ready to step in are Olivia Brooks, Kate Devlin and Jamie Ryan.
