No.  1 Longmeadow clinched the Berry Division title and the top seed in the upcoming Western Mass. Division 3 tournament following a 3-1 win over No. 2 Westfield. Jack Barron scored twice and Sam D’Angelo once for the Lancers. Spencer Robbins assisted on all goals. Max Loyuk faced only nine shots and stopped eight of them.

No. 3 West Springfield lost to East Longmeadow, 3-1.

Doug Hanieski scored two goals and set up another to spark No. 5 Greenfield to a 3-0 victory over No. 10 Amherst. Evan Simmons had a goal and assist, while Riley Drew had a 19-save shutout.

Garrin Bugiel had a hat trick and added one assist to spark No. 6 Easthampton to a 6-0 victory over Mt. Everett. Jake Batchelder added two goals and an assist.

Ryan Martin scored two goals and added an assist as No. 7 Ludlow beat South Hadley, 6-4. Aiden McBride scored twice.

No. 10 Chicopee Comp qualified for the Division 3A tournament following a 7-0 triumph over Wahconah. Garrett Riopelli earned his 100th career point with a four-goal effort. His 21 goals are a career high. Kyle Vezina had a 21-save shutout – his first this season.


*Vaughn Gillen struck for five goals to power Belchertown to a 7-3 victory over Drury, clinching a berth in the Division 3A tournament. Cody Lambert and Christopher Buffone also scored, while Matt Pacheco had six assists.

*Anthony Passerini scored one goal and added a pair of assists to spark Agawam to a 3-2 decision over Ludlow. Nick Frigo and Steve Grasso each added one goal and an assist, while Nick Brady finished with 27 saves.

Fran Sypek

Fran has covered hockey at all levels, NHL, AHL, junior, college and high school for the Springfield Republican from 1978-2013. His column "Hockey Talk'' appeared in the Sunday Republican. The hockey beat took him from Maine to Arizona in the United States and from Newfoundland to Alberta in Canada. Fran was the recipient of the Matthew Ryan Award for Outstanding Coverage of High School Hockey and the Janet McCormick Award from the Springfield Olympics. He then shifted from pros to college when the University of Massachusetts restored its program and joined Hockey East. Later, he continued covering the Boston Bruins and the Springfield Falcons. Fran's covered future NHL players from Western Massachusetts in Paul Fenton, Bob Kudelski, Rick Bennett and Bill Guerin. He is a member of the Bessone Award committee, which helps select the top high school hockey player in Western Mass. Fran was a goalie for Holyoke Community College in 1973-74 and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1977. Fran is currently a free lance writer living in Bondsville, Mass and grew up in Chicopee, Mass, has visited all 50 states, and is an avid photographer.
