They beat the team that had been No. 1 down the stretch. They beat the team that was No. 1 most of the year, a team that had defeated them in the regular season.
Westhill/Stamford, Connecticut Division III champion, tops Hockey Night in Boston’s final D3 rankings after a 5-4 win over Staples/Weston/Shelton in the final. The first-year co-op won its last nine against Division II or Division III competition, including a 6-2 win over eventual Division II champion Fairfield, after a 3-2 loss to Staples in the regular season, its only loss to a Division III team.
The HNIB Mid-Atlantic Festival, comprised of top players from Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, will be held June 17-19 at the Northford Ice Pavilion. Play with and against top players from the tri-state area. Teams for HNIB’s Sophomore All Star Tournament (July 10-15) and Boys Major Showcase (July 27-31) will be finalized following the Festival.

Westhill/Stamford’s road to the final went through Barlow, No. 6 Hall/Southington and No. 3 New Fairfield/Immaculate. No. 4 Woodstock Academy took Staples to overtime in the semifinals.
No. 5 BCR, playing a Division-II heavy schedule, had a good showing most of the year, shook off a late slump, won a state game and lost by a goal to NFI in the quarters. No. 6 Hall/Southington had a similar year, falling to the eventual champs in the quarters. No. 7 Lyman Hall/HK/Southington knocked off No. 8 Tri-Town, among the hottest teams in the state going into the tournament, in the first round.
No. 9 Housatonic/Northwestern got its first CIAC tournament win in 15 years in the first round. And the No. 10 NFA Redhawks were among many Division III teams with lots of good results during the year.
