Defending champ Wellesley not only was going for back-to-back state titles when it faced off in the MIAA D2 Girls championship game against Notre Dame of Hingham, but the Raiders also wanted to settle a score.
The teams played twice during the regular season, and the Cougars had gained a win and a tie against the Raiders.
It was mission accomplished for Wellesley (17-4-3), which took a 3-2 overtime win for its second straight title, ending the season as the #1 team in the final HNIB News Massachusetts Girls D2 Top 10.
Notre Dame (16-6-2), which had a great season under first-year head coach John Findley, finishes at #2.
The top-seed entering the post-season tournament, Walpole (18-4-1) ends the season at #3, falling to Wellesley in a semifinal matchup.
#4 Westwood (15-3-5), up near the top all season long, finishes at #4 after a semifinal defeat to Notre Dame.
Matignon (15-6-2) ends up at #5. Four of Matignon’s losses were to Division 1’s top three teams, Methuen/Tewksbury, Austin Prep (2) and Andover.
