For much of the 2021-22 season, Newington and E.O. Smith/Tolland battled and jockeyed for position both in the CIAC Division 3 race and in the Hockey Night in Boston rankings.
In the end, it turned out to be no real debate at all. Newington clearly established itself by skating away with the state championship and the final HNIB #1 rankings.
E.O. Smith/Tolland’s road ended much earlier than expected as the #2 Bucks fell short in a quarterfinal overtime stunner against Conard, which rose to #3 in the final rankings. Conard reached the title game before falling short against Newington.
JBWA’s strong season got derailed in the semifinals, wrapping things up at #4.
#5 BBD reached the semifinals before falling to Conard, while knocking off #6 New Milford in a quarterfinal matchup.
Staples gave Newington a tough battle in the quarterfinals, putting the Wreckers in the final #7 spot. Staples earned its way there with a first-round win over final #8 SGWL.
