Notre Dame-West Haven kept its hold on the No. 1 spot in the Hockey Night in Boston Connecticut Division 1 rankings after a week in which the Green Knights didn’t play a single opponent from the Nutmeg State. They weren’t off the ice completely, venturing up to Massachusetts for a victory against Bishop Fenwick.
Xavier remains in the No. 2 spot despite being upset by unranked Simsbury to open the week. That’s because the Falcons were able to bounce back strong with a win over No. 3 New Canaan.
As for the Rams? They were able to follow up the Xavier loss by beating Greenwich on Monday to hold their spot for another week.
But Darien moves up to No. 4 thanks to a win over Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe, which flips spots with the Blue Wave and drops to No. 5. The Mustangs did earn a win earlier in the week against Westhill-Stamford.
New No. 6 Northwest Catholic continues to impress, scoring wins over both Glastonbury and Greenwich.
The Nos. 7 and 8 spots were settled fairly easily in a head-to-head matchup between Fairfield Prep and Ridgefield. The Jesuits came away on top and with the No. 7 spot, leaving No. 8 to Ridgefield. The Tigers also scored a win over Greenwich to balance out the week.
The action heats up immediately this week with a Tuesday matinee between the state’s top two teams – ND-West Haven and Xavier at Champions Skating Rink in Cromwell (3:40 p.m.). New Canaan also treks to Ridgefield for a late-night matchup Wednesday, and is at Darien on Saturday, while Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe goes to Ridgefield on Saturday.
Keep an eye on the action in Massachusetts this week. Not only does ND-West Haven return to the Bay State for a Saturday matchup with Central Catholic, but Fairfield Prep and Northwest Catholic head up I-91 to take part in the Pope Francis Invitational along with the host Cardinals and Bishop Hendricken.
Looking ahead to next Monday, four of this week’s top five teams will be matched up head to head – Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe vs. New Canaan, and ND-West Haven vs. Darien.
