Connecticut Division 1 Quarterfinals: Top-Seed Ridgefield Stunned

The wackiness of the Connecticut boys’ state hockey playoffs continued Saturday evening. After three upsets were recorded during the Division 2 quarterfinals, a couple of more were registered in Division 1.

* The most notable was unbeaten and top-seeded Ridgefield falling to Xavier 3-2 in overtime. Nick LeClaire stole the puck inside the defensive zone and raced down ice before unleashing a hard wrist shot past past Sean Gordon to end it for the eight-seeded Falcons. Tom Lynch tied the game for the Falcons in the third period. Chase Maxwell also had a goal. Matt Walker had both goals for Ridgefield.

*  On the strength of an early first period goal from sophomore Connor Melanson, #2 Northwest Catholic managed to hold on to nip #7 New Canaan 1-0.

* #3 Darien fell victim to #6 Notre Dame-West Haven 3-1. After losing to Darien twice during the regular season, the Green Knights got their revenge. Ian Hayden netted one goal and added one assist. Goaltender Connor Smith made 30 saves.

* Colin Bella scored a goal and was in on pair of assists to help lift #5 Fairfield Prep to a 4-0 shutout over #13 Notre Dame-Fairfield. Chandler Dumont, Connor Boyle and Lucas Baksay each had a goal as well for the Jesuits.
