Connecticut D2 Tourney Preview: No clearcut favorite in this field

Two things are clear at first glance at the CIAC Division II bracket (http://content.ciacsports.com/brackets/ihoc2015II.html)

One, if the chalk held in the first round, man, that’d be some quarterfinals. Conard vs. North Haven, a high-octane team against a team that came on in the second half and still somehow recorded five ties. North Branford vs. Newington/Berlin/Manchester, a team that started strong against a team that hasn’t had huge tests but has played relatively well.

Or how about Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks vs. New Milford, one of the year’s most-consistent D-II teams against a team with some big wins, weird losses and real excitement after winning a conference playoff game. And Branford vs. Fairfield, which could reasonably be the game of the tournament.

And two, if the chalk didn’t hold at all, would anyone be surprised? It’s Division II.

BCR, the 16th seed, may be least likely to spring an upset on Conard. But Cheshire beat North Haven in the regular season. Wilton had some big wins, and North Branford has been up and down since the midpoint. Guilford and East Haven both had a good second half. Milford and defending champion Hand have both had tournament success in past years.

Since the 13th seed has won the past two Division II tournaments, obviously Wilton has to be the betting favorite. But seriously, it should be fun to watch.
