We will find out a lot about the top of the Connecticut D1 hockey world right off the bat when the HNIB News top two teams in the 2018-19 Connecticut D1 Preseason Top 10 square off to open the season Wednesday when #1 Ridgefield (20-5-0) takes on #2 Fairfield Prep (22-2-1).

There isn’t much to separate the two teams. The Tigers return what should be the premier offensive line in the state in senior veterans Nick Cullinan, Matt Walker and Will Forrest, as well as a seasoned goalie in senior Sean Gordon.

The Jesuits, the defending state champions, are breaking in a new starting goaltender in Jake Walker, and saw a lot of talented players move on via graduation. But, there is still a solid nucleus back.

Last year’s state finalist, Greenwich (21-4-0), starts the season at #3, led by talented players like forwards Matt Davey and Sean Pratley and defenseman Ryan Colombo. #4 Hamden (14-8-0) is primed to make a big leap this winter, if they can replace the graduated Steven Turner in goal.

#5 Xavier (16-6-1) is under new management, with Nick Constanzo taking over the controls. There are also new coaches at Notre Dame West Haven (Larry Veiera) and New Fairfield/Immaculate (Mike Bonelli).
