The defending champions made a couple of early statements. No. 1 Darien beat Hamden 6-0 and Fairfield Prep 4-1 to reclaim the top of HNIB News Connecticut Division I rankings. The Blue Wave face archrival New Canaan on Tuesday.

The Rams lost to No. 2 Notre Dame-West Haven to open the season, and the Green Knights kept rolling, beating Simsbury and then taking No. 3 Notre Dame-Fairfield 3-1.

Last year’s runner-up, No. 4 Greenwich, earned a big opening-night win over No. 7 Xavier, then followed up with a 12-0 win over West Haven.

No. 6 Fairfield Prep, preseason No. 1, fell to No. 5 Ridgefield in overtime. Ridgefield will get a couple of more big tests this week, Notre Dame-Fairfield on Tuesday and ND-West Haven on Wednesday.

No. 8 Hamden followed its opening loss with a 6-2 win over New Canaan, the first win as head coach for Todd Hall. No. 9 Simsbury dropped a close one to ND-West Haven but had a couple of wins around it. And No. 10 Glastonbury had a handy win over a New Milford team that has some potential in Division II.
