If the FCIAC final turns out to be the state final in a couple of weeks, it wouldn’t be a shock; No. 1 Darien and No. 2 Greenwich are the top two seeds and have been around the top of Hockey Night in Boston’s Connecticut Division I top 10 for a while.
If it is the final, Darien would likely go in as a favorite after a 5-3 win over Greenwich. The Blue Wave scored four in the second period to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. Will Massie’s 19 saves stood out, and five different players scored goals for Darien.
No. 5 Notre Dame-West Haven beat No. 10 Hamden 3-2 in the SCC/SWC Division I final behind Matt Plaziak’s two goals. The teams had just met on Feb. 25 when they played again Friday, and they’ll meet again Wednesday in the first round of the state tournament.
Where were No. 3 Xavier and No. 4 Notre Dame-Fairfield for that final? Many of the games that counted for them toward the SCC/SWC standings were early on, before their seasons turned on. They both closed the regular season with wins, Xavier beating No. 6 Fairfield Prep a second time, 4-1 (the Falcons are unbeaten in 12), and Notre Dame beating ND-West Haven 3-1.
No. 9 Glastonbury needed overtime for a third time against Simsbury, but for a third time, the Tomahawks won it. Matt Holdaway’s goal early in double OT gave Glastonbury a 2-1 win in the CCC North final.
