Central Mass. Top 10: Algonquin, Wachusett Settle Nothing In Tie

The game of the week in Central Mass. saw Algonquin and Wachusett battle to a 2-2 deadlock. Sean Gardner scored two goals for Wachusett. Jack Shemligan scored and set up the equalizer by Matteo Calvanese to lift  No. 1 Algonquin to the tie.

Algonquin also tied Division 1 Shrewsbury, 1-1. Matteo Calvanese provided the Tomahawks with a 1-0 first period lead before Sam O’Connor scored the tying goal midway through the final period. Matt Bogdanski finished with 22 saves.

Hudson has been on a roll.

Bryce Miranda and Colin Dannenfels scored one goal each as Hudson beat Westborough, 2-0. Ryan Gonzalez continued his steady goaltending with a 25-save performance as the Hawks raised their record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Quinn. Matt Lombardi set up  both goals for Hudson. Will Schiffman made 19 saves for Westboro.

Hudson followed that up with a convincing 7-2 triumph over West Springfield. Cam O’Brien scored  two goals. Kyle Gonzalez made 16 saves to collect his first varsity victory.


* Kevin Skagerlind scored two goals as Wachusett blanked Longmeadow, 4-0. Michael Iacaboni and Grant Gardula each had two assists. Ryan Gardula and Dylan McCarthy scored one goal each. Jackson King made 17 saves for the shutout.

Nate Glencross

* Tyler Dodge scored two goals to lead Groton-Dunstable to a 5-2 triumph over Marlboro. Nate Glencross had three assists for the Crusaders. Ryan Cox had one goal and an assist, while Brendan Ferrari and Jake Figueroa also scored. Matt Farrell and Cam Sinopoli scored for Marlborough.

* Matthew Albert, Sean Simpson and Jacob Mauro scored one goal apiece to lift Lunenburg to a 3-0 victory over Oakmont. Anthony Firmani secured the shutout with an 18-save effort

* Maliq Munoz-Preko scored two goals to lead Leominster past North Middlesex, 3-1. Bryce Vitone also scored.  Ryan Riel scored for North Middlesex.

Fran Sypek

Fran Sypek

Fran has covered hockey at all levels, NHL, AHL, junior, college and high school for the Springfield Republican from 1978-2013. His column "Hockey Talk'' appeared in the Sunday Republican. The hockey beat took him from Maine to Arizona in the United States and from Newfoundland to Alberta in Canada. Fran was the recipient of the Matthew Ryan Award for Outstanding Coverage of High School Hockey and the Janet McCormick Award from the Springfield Olympics. He then shifted from pros to college when the University of Massachusetts restored its program and joined Hockey East. Later, he continued covering the Boston Bruins and the Springfield Falcons. Fran's covered future NHL players from Western Massachusetts in Paul Fenton, Bob Kudelski, Rick Bennett and Bill Guerin. He is a member of the Bessone Award committee, which helps select the top high school hockey player in Western Mass. Fran was a goalie for Holyoke Community College in 1973-74 and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1977. Fran is currently a free lance writer living in Bondsville, Mass and grew up in Chicopee, Mass, has visited all 50 states, and is an avid photographer.
