As we expected, our first in-season HNIB News Boys Prep Top 15 looks markedly different than our pre-season version. Teams have taken turns knocking each other off. Teams with fast starts have come back to earth a bit. Others that started slow have turned things around.
With no action this weekend, here is our latest Top 15. And, it could have a very new look in the next installment.
We will go with Dexter Southfield (5-1-1) as the #1 team this week. Coach Dan Donato’s club won the recent Lawrence/Groton Tournament, knocking off Proctor 7-2 in the title game. Dexter also beat a strong Culver team there and owns a pair of wins over Cushing. The season resumes after Christmas with a trip to the Watkins Tournament.
Our pre-season #1 Salisbury (8-2-0), n0w #2, allowed a surprising 15 goals in back-to-back losses to Millbrook and Hotchkiss, but the Knights have appeared to right themselves, earning the title at the Flood Marr Tournament with four solid wins. Salisbury returns to action January 4th against Brunswick.
#3 Gunnery (7-2-1) scored just 11 goals in four games at the Avon Old Farms Tournament, but won all four, and took home the championship there. The Highlanders swing back into action with a January 2 match against North Yarmouth Academy.
From here on, it is wide-open.
We wiil go with Avon Old Farms (6-2-1) at #4 and St. Sebastian’s (7-2-0) at #5. The Winged Beavers were an impressive 3-0-1 in their Holiday Tournament, finishing third overall, while the Arrows took home the title at their holiday tournament, edging Northwood in the title game.
Other big movers include #6 Tilton (8-1-0), #7 Phillips Andover (8-2-0), #11 Kimball Union (7-4-0) and #12 Deerfield (6-2-0).
Action over the holiday break includes the Watkins Tournament at Cushing, The Belmont Hill-Nichols Tournament, and the Joshua Weeks Tournament at Tabor.
