Boys Prep Poll: Regular season enters final month

With a little less than a month to go in the regular season, the race for playoff berths now becomes more relevant, especially those eight spots in the Elite Tournament.

Kimball Union (23-3-1) continues to make its case for one of those spots. The Wildcats remain in the top spot in this week’s HNIB News Boys Prep Top 15. This past week saw KUA register one goal wins over a pair of solid opponents in Phillips Exeter (2-1) and Tilton (4-3). This week Kimball Union gets Northfield (Wednesday) and Holderness (Friday).

#2 Dexter (15-3-0) was dominant, getting big wins over St. George’s (6-1) and St. Mark’s (12-1). A three-game week finds Brooks (Monday), Pomfret (Wednesday) and Andover (Saturday).

Also rolling along is #3 Rivers (16-3-2), winners of three games this past week: Roxbury Latin (2-0), Nobles (6-1) and Middlesex (4-1). The Red Wings will see Groton (Wednesday) and Belmont Hill (Saturday).

Lawrence Academy (13-3-1) jumps up to #4 getting wins over Governors Academy (5-3) and St. Paul’s (2-1). The Spartans have a key clash with Belmont Hill (Wednesday), then take on Hebron (Friday) and BB&N (Saturday).

#5 Phillips Exeter (16-4-0) rebounded from the loss to KUA with an 8-0 whitewashing of BB&N. The Big Red get Lakes Division foes Holderness (Wednesday) and Tilton (Saturday).

#6 Salisbury (15-4-2) had a nice win over Gunnery (3-0), then were tied up by Berkshire (1-1) on Saturday. The Crimson Knights take on Brunswick (Monday) and Trinity-Pawling (Wednesday).

Up a few spots to #7 this week is Thayer (14-5-0) after wins over St. Paul’s (7-1) and St. Sebastian’s (5-4). Nobles is up on Wednesday for the Tigers, followed by BB&N (Friday) and Governors Academy (Saturday).

#8 Avon Old Farms (10-4-3) fell in OT to Westminster (2-1), but bounced back in a big way with shutout wins over Loomis Chaffee (4-0) and Choate (5-0). A rematch with Westminster is on for Wednesday.

#9 Gunnery (15-6-0) beat Vermont Academy (5-2) after earlier losing to Salisbury. The Highlanders look ahead to Millbrook on Wednesday.

#10 Albany Academy (15-4-4) is coming off a busy weekend that included wins over Nichols (6-1) and Academie St. Louis (7-1) and a 4-4 tie with Nichols. The Cadets are set to take on Brunswick (Wednesday) and Winchedon (Saturday).

#11 Kent (9-4-2) edged Taft 2-1 in its only action of the week. The Lions will see Taft again on Wednesday.

#12 Belmont Hill (13-6-2) beat Brooks (1-0) then came up short against Cushing (4-3). A three-game week includes Andover (Friday) and Rivers (Saturday) after the Lawrence battle Wednesday.

Loomis Chaffee (9-6-1) hit a bump in the road losing three straight to Avon (4-0), Brunswick (4-1) and Andover (4-3) to drop down to #13 this week. The Pelicans face off against Williston on Wednesday.

#14 Taft (10-5-1) is back in the poll following a 7-1 win over Trinity Pawling Saturday. The Rhinos will try to cool off Kent Wednesday.

Winners of six straight games, New Hampton (12-7-3) moves into the poll this week at #15. The Huskies take on Stanstead College (Wednesday) and Winchendon (Friday).
