Boys Prep Poll: Key games highlight upcoming week

A couple of close-fought wins over the past week keeps Kimball Union (25-3-1) in the #1 spot in this week’s HNIB News Boys Prep Top 15.

The Wildcats pulled away late for a 4-1 win over Northfield Mt. Hermon, and then slipped past Holderness 2-1. A tough week looms with Andover (Wednesday), New Hampton (Friday) and Holderness again (Saturday).

#2 Dexter (17-3-1) also had some close games, going 2-0-1 with wins over Brooks (3-0) and Andover (3-2), while skating to a 3-3 tie with improved Pomfret. A key game is on for Wednesday against red-hot New Hampton, then Dexter gets Tabor on Friday.

Lawrence Academy (15-3-2) is up one spot to #3 after a week that saw the Spartans tie Belmont Hill (1-1) and knock off Hebron (3-1) and BB&N (6-1). A huge showdown is on tap Wednesday against Thayer, then a tough one with St.Sebastian’s comes up on Friday.

#4 Rivers (17-4-2) beat Groton (4-1), then suffered a tough 5-4 loss to Belmont Hill after being up 3-0. Only Eberhart Division games remain for the Red Wings, with St. George’s up Wednesday and Roxbury Latin¬†Saturday.

#5 Thayer (17-5-0) moves up a few spots and has now won seven straight games heading into Wednesday’s battle with Lawrence Academy, the last team to beat the Tigers. Things don’t get any easier on Friday against Belmont Hill.

#6 Phillips Exeter (17-5-0) rebounded from a 3-2 loss to Holderness with a 4-3 win over Tilton. The Big Red have a three game week, starting with Proctor (Wednesday) and including Hebron (Friday) and Choate (Saturday).

#7 Gunnery (16-6-0) played just once this past week, getting past Millbrook (4-3). The Highlanders get two ranked teams this week with Avon Old Farms (Wednesday) and Brunswick (Friday).

#8 Belmont Hill (14-6-4) had a nice week, tying Lawrence Academy (1-1) and Andover (3-3) and beating Rivers (5-4). A three-game week see St. Sebastian’s (Wednesday) and BB&N (Saturday) around the Thayer matchup Friday.

A pair of losses to Brunswick (4-2) and Trinity Pawling (4-2) have #9 Salisbury (15-6-2) in a mini-skid. The Crimson Knights hope to snap out of it this week against Taft (Wednesday) and Loomis Chaffee (Saturday).

Loomis Chaffee (10-6-1) re-enters the Top 10 with a big 4-2 win over Williston. The Pelicans get Deerfield on Wednesday before seeing Salisbury.

Rounding out this week’s Top 15 are #11 Taft (11-5-1), #12 Avon Old Farms (10-5-3), #13 Kent (9-5-2), #14 New Hampton (14-7-3) and #15 Brunswick (12-7-3).
