Westfield and Longmeadow have flip-flopped in this week’s HNIB News Western Mass. Top 10. The Bombers (5-2-0) assume the top spot, just a tick ahead of Longmeadow (3-3-1). Both teams are unbeaten in Western Mass. play.

They will meet for the first time on January 8th, with the Lancers hosting at the Olympia.

A big mover this week is Amherst/Pelham, which has roared out to a 6-0-0 start.

#4 South Hadley (5-1-0) and #5 Belchertown (5-1-1) are also off to solid starts.

Highlights

* It was a battle of two outstanding goalies as Chicopee Comp edged rival Chicopee, 2-1 in overtime. Freshman Dylan Seymour scored the game-winner with assists from Griffin Larochelle and Gavin Bogalhas. Kyle Vezina made 35 saves for the Colts and Dylan Rooney finished with 16 for the Pacers. For MIAA purposes, the game goes down as a 1-1 tie.

* Christopher Tenczar scored a pair of goals and set up two others to power Easthampton to an 8-2 triumph over West Springfield. Garren Fugiel also scored a pair of goals and assisted on another. Tyler Cortis madd 19 saves.

* Dominic  Terzi scored twice and Shawn Mushenko had three assists as Minnechaug beat Northbridge, 4-2. Matthew Kowal added two assists.

* Cam Pete and Matt Brunelle each scored two goals to lead South Hadley to a 6-4 victory over Wahconah.

Fran Sypek

Fran has covered hockey at all levels, NHL, AHL, junior, college and high school for the Springfield Republican from 1978-2013. His column "Hockey Talk'' appeared in the Sunday Republican. The hockey beat took him from Maine to Arizona in the United States and from Newfoundland to Alberta in Canada. Fran was the recipient of the Matthew Ryan Award for Outstanding Coverage of High School Hockey and the Janet McCormick Award from the Springfield Olympics. He then shifted from pros to college when the University of Massachusetts restored its program and joined Hockey East. Later, he continued covering the Boston Bruins and the Springfield Falcons. Fran's covered future NHL players from Western Massachusetts in Paul Fenton, Bob Kudelski, Rick Bennett and Bill Guerin. He is a member of the Bessone Award committee, which helps select the top high school hockey player in Western Mass. Fran was a goalie for Holyoke Community College in 1973-74 and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1977. Fran is currently a free lance writer living in Bondsville, Mass and grew up in Chicopee, Mass, has visited all 50 states, and is an avid photographer.
