No. 1 Longmeadow continues to fend off all challengers. Longmeadow rebounded from its loss to Central Mass. power Shrewsbury with a 4-1 victory over No. 3 West Springfield.

The one-two scoring punch of Jack Barron and Spencer Robbins has come up big for the Lancers all season. Barron had a pair of goals against West Side and Robbins added one goal dished out three assists. Matt Franz also scored.

Barron and Robbins have been the two best forwards in the Berry Division this season. They combined for 11 points in an 11-1 win over Agawam. Robbins had three goals and three assists. Barron had one goal and four assists. Noah Skole earned his first victory in goal with 11 saves. Nick DeMaio had the lone goal for the Terriers.

No. 2 Westfield defeated D2 Marblehead, 4-1. Gavin Carzello, Nate Boucher, Max Maggipinto and Matt Pelletier scored one goal apiece for the Bombers. Cam Parent stopped 27 of 28 shots. Westfield followed that with a 3-0 victory over Algonquin. Cam Parent had a 34-save shutout. Maggipinto, Alex Beauchemin and Chris Czarnecki scored for the Bombers.

Mike Palermo scored one goal and assisted on two others as No. 5 Chicopee battled to a 3-3 tie with No. 10 South Hadley. Ryan McDonough had one goal and one assist for the Pacers Michael Mazza had two goals for the Tigers.

No. 4 Ludlow ran into a hot goaltender as No. 9 Chicopee Comp’s Kyle Vezina made 42 saves in a 3-1 victory over the Lions. Carter Brunelle, Garrett Riopelli and Matt Villandry scored for the Colts to offset a Ludlow goal by Cole Moutinho.

A four-goal second period carried No. 6 East Longmeadow to a 6-2 victory over D1 St. Peter Marian.

HIGHLIGHTS

*Vaughn Gilen and Matt Pacheo each scored twice to spark Belchertown to a 5-4 triumph over Mt. Everett. Nate Pacheo added one goal and set up three others.

*Corby Manini made 14 saves for the shutout as Minnechaug blanked East Longmeadow, 4-0. Matt Kowal, Bill Gosselin, Dominic Terzi and Dylan Bake scored for Minnechaug.

*Corbin Rumbolt scored two goals to lead Drury to a 3-1 decision over Mt. Everett. Nathan Haley made 27 saves.

*Matthew Villandry recorded a hat trick, while Derek Boutin added one goal and four assists as Chicopee Comp beat Mt. Everett, 6-4. Kyle Vezina had 37 saves for the Colts.

*Nate Pacheo scored two goals to spark Belchertown to a 3-2 decision over Amherst. Vaughn Gilen also scored for the Orioles.

Fran Sypek

Fran has covered hockey at all levels, NHL, AHL, junior, college and high school for the Springfield Republican from 1978-2013. His column "Hockey Talk'' appeared in the Sunday Republican. The hockey beat took him from Maine to Arizona in the United States and from Newfoundland to Alberta in Canada. Fran was the recipient of the Matthew Ryan Award for Outstanding Coverage of High School Hockey and the Janet McCormick Award from the Springfield Olympics. He then shifted from pros to college when the University of Massachusetts restored its program and joined Hockey East. Later, he continued covering the Boston Bruins and the Springfield Falcons. Fran's covered future NHL players from Western Massachusetts in Paul Fenton, Bob Kudelski, Rick Bennett and Bill Guerin. He is a member of the Bessone Award committee, which helps select the top high school hockey player in Western Mass. Fran was a goalie for Holyoke Community College in 1973-74 and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1977. Fran is currently a free lance writer living in Bondsville, Mass and grew up in Chicopee, Mass, has visited all 50 states, and is an avid photographer.
