Mass. Girls Division I Poll
The Big 3 continue to be just that, all coming though the first week of 2018 unscathed. Therefore, they remain the same in this week’s HNIB News Massachusetts Girls D1 Top 10.
#1 Austin Prep (6-0-0) finished last week with a win over Wellesley, and began this week the same with a 4-1 win over the Raiders. The Cougars then beat a solid Longmeadow team on Saturday (3-1). They have a three-game week, seeing Billerica/Chelmsford (Monday), Arlington Catholic (Wednesday) and a big showdown with #3 St. Mary’s on Saturday.
Defending D1 state champ Woburn (7-0-1) is still very much in the mix. The Tanners handed Belmont its first loss this past week (4-2) then held off Arlington Saturday (2-1). Woburn cannot look past Reading (Wednesday) or Lexington (Saturday).
St Mary’s (5-1-0), fresh off wins over impressive wins over Weymouth (8-0) and Matignon (6-1), tangles with Walpole Wednesday prior to taking on Austin Prep.
#4 Methuen/Tewksbury (6-1-0) downed Acton-Boxboro (7-1) in its only action. The Red Rangers swing back into shape this week against Beverly/Danvers (Wednesday) and Algonquin/Hudson (Saturday).
Up a spot to #5 is Masconomet (5-1-1) after solid wins over Peabody/Lynnfield (6-2) and Winthrop (5-2). The Chieftains will have their hands full with HPNA (Thursday) and then see league foe Marblehead (Saturday).
#6 Duxbury (5-1-1) picked up an impressive shutout win over Haverhill/Pentucket/North Andover Saturday (4-0). The Dragons face Quincy/North Quincy (Wednesday) and get upstart Plymouth (Saturday).
Westford Academy (4-1-1) climbs a spot to #7 after returning to game play Saturday with a 6-3 conquest of Waltham. The Grey Ghosts have Concord-Carlisle (Wednesday) and Boston Latin (Saturday) on the docket this week.
#8 Barnstable (4-0-3) had a pair of wins this week, taking down Norwell (5-2) and Falmouth (2-1). The Red Raiders look to continue their winning ways Wednesday against BMW/ORR and Latin Academy/Fontbonne next Sunday.
Making their debut in the D1 poll is #9 Shrewsbury, still perfect on the season at 6-0-0. The Colonials faced Falmouth, Maine on Saturday and took a 7-0 win. Junior forward Delaney Couture has been on fire with 19 goals so far. They face Leominster on Wednesday and Auburn on Saturday in Central/West play.
Despite falling from the unbeaten ranks, Braintree (6-1-0) holds firm at #10. The Wamps will take on Needham on Wednesday.
Teams to Keep an Eye On: Plymouth (7-1-1), Andover (5-2-0), Boston Latin (4-1-2).
