Woburn players celebrate second straight MIAA Girls D1 state title at TD Garden.
Woburn lost some key players after winning the Girls Division 1 championship in 2017. But, a core group of seniors were returning, and veteran coach Bob MacCurtain knew that if certain things fell into place, the Tanners would be contenders again.
They not only were contenders, they were champions… again.
Sunday’s 1-0 win over Methuen/Tewksbury at TD Garden clinched Woburn’s second straight state championship. It was the Tanners fourth D1 title, and fifth overall, having one their first state crown at the Division 2 level. They finished the season at 24-0-2, and are now unbeaten in their last 32 games dating back to the 2016-2017 season.
#2 Methuen/Tewksbury (22-2-2) also had a banner season. The Red Rangers moved up to Division 1 this season, and moved into the MVC/Dual County Large division as well. It didn’t faze them at all, as they came within a goal of a state title.
#3 Austin Prep (21-1-2) spent most of the regular season ranked #1, and had an unbeaten season until a one-goal loss to Woburn in the semifinals.
#4 Masconomet (18-4-2) made its second straight trip to the semifinals. #5 Shrewsbury enjoyed an undefeatged regular season that resulted in the top seed heading into the post-season.
