The Division III favorite in Connecticut from Day 1 has made it to the final. Waiting for Woodstock Academy: Hall/Southington, the only Division III team to beat the Centaurs this season.
Woodstock Academy got to the final with a handy 6-0 win over Lyman Hall/HK/Coginchaug. The Warrior Knights made it with a 1-0 semifinal win over WMRP behind junior Zach Monti‘s shutout. Hall/Southington’s Mike DiPietro scored the only goal 4:02 into the third period on a puck he sent out of the right corner to the net that caromed in as he followed it to the right post, the only puck to get past stellar WMRP senior goalie Stevie Vaughan.
Cal Wilcox made 20 saves for Woodstock, and Nathan DeLuca — who had a hand in all three first-period goals — and Ryan Black scored two goals apiece as the Centaurs, a fourth-year varsity program, reached the final for the first time. They lost in overtime in the semifinals last season.
The finalists split during the regular season. Woodstock Academy won 2-1 at home on New Year’s Eve. Hall/Southington returned the favor, 3-2, on Feb. 6 in West Hartford. The only other blemishes on the Centaurs’ record were a loss to Conard and a tie with New Fairfield/Immaculate, both Division II teams; Woodstock went 6-1-1 against teams from higher divisions. Hall/Southington is 12-9-3 overall, 10-3-2 against Division III foes; its only other Division III losses were both to WMRP.
